Defeated Dragon

Discovering something totally unexpected when exploring a place is always delightful. I’ve seen a lot, but I had certainly never come across a conquered (or maybe, merely sleeping) monster before, not to mention a red one! But this is Holland, where everything, however bizarre, seems to be taken in stride; no one else seemed half as interested as I was in this prostrate dragon, lying on its back in the middle of the town. Perhaps it had been there for so long that people simply didn’t notice; perhaps they didn’t care. Or perhaps I was the only one who saw it...? I had, after all, just had a rather large drink... Sunset and the City

Sunsets, though often beautiful, almost always cunningly manage to avoid being captured satisfactorily on camera. I think this is partly because the setting of the sun is not a single moment, but a process –an ongoing thing, and it is the experience of this that makes it both magically memorable and elusive to much photography –one can only capture a fragment of its beauty. However, it took me a long time to realize that a more promising time to photograph and capture some echo of that magic is when the sun itself has disappeared but the sky has not yet become dark. This picture is from Berlin, taken while waiting for a train. I liked the clouds and colours and the silhouettes of railway structures against the sky, and especially the gleaming light on the rail -stretching into the distance with promise.
