Sunset and the City

Sunsets, though often beautiful, almost always cunningly manage to avoid being captured satisfactorily on camera. I think this is partly because the setting of the sun is not a single moment, but a process –an ongoing thing, and it is the experience of this that makes it both magically memorable and elusive to much photography –one can only capture a fragment of its beauty. However, it took me a long time to realize that a more promising time to photograph and capture some echo of that magic is when the sun itself has disappeared but the sky has not yet become dark. This picture is from Berlin, taken while waiting for a train. I liked the clouds and colours and the silhouettes of railway structures against the sky, and especially the gleaming light on the rail -stretching into the distance with promise. Location: Berlin, Germany
